UK Car Registration in Spain – Stress-Free Matriculación Service.
Matriculación is a complex, multi-stage import process that must be completed when relocating to Spain with a UK-registered vehicle. Since Brexit, this procedure has become significantly more demanding. Because your car is now classed as a non-EU import, it is subject to additional customs requirements, strict deadlines, and potential taxes. Completing the process correctly is essential, our expert team is here to take the stress off your shoulders.

Why Registering a UK Vehicle in Spain Is Now More Challenging
Non-EU Import Status
UK-registered vehicles are treated as “third-country” imports and are normally liable for 10% Import Duty plus 21% VAT (IVA), calculated on the vehicle’s current value.
The Critical Tax Waiver
Permanent movers may qualify for a Transfer of Residence (ToR) tax exemption, avoiding the 31% combined tax charge. However, eligibility rules are extremely strict, and deadlines are non-negotiable. Missing the application window by even a few days can result in a substantial tax bill.
Post-Brexit Technical Barriers
UK vehicles registered before 1 January 2021 and holding EU Type Approval can usually be registered in Spain using a Ficha Técnica Reducida.
Vehicles registered after this date, however, are no longer classed as EU vehicles by Spanish authorities. Many now face technical rejections, and the standard route of Individual Homologation is often unsuccessful.
In certain cases, we may be able to assist with advance registration before the vehicle arrives in Spain. Contact our team to explore your options.
Strict and Non-Negotiable Deadlines
As a UK national, you are legally required to register your vehicle within a defined timeframe after becoming a Spanish resident.
- Driving on UK plates is permitted for up to six months, but
- The matriculación process, including the Transfer of Residence application, should begin within 30–60 days of arrival or residency approval.
Failure to comply can result in significant fines or vehicle seizure.
Once you become a Spanish resident, the registration deadline is reduced to 30 days from the vehicle’s arrival in Spain. Residency is considered effective from the day your visa is issued.
Your Route to Spanish Plates – Fully Managed
All motorised vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes, must complete the full matriculación and customs process.
In most cases, importing your own vehicle is more cost-effective than buying in Spain. Due to a smaller used-car market and longer vehicle ownership cycles, Spanish used vehicles are often more expensive.
Our managed service ensures full compliance with Customs (DUA), the Spanish Tax Agency, and the Traffic Authority (DGT).
